Different athletes may view supplements differently. What a supplement means may depend on who you are and what you do. Citrulline is an amino acid produced when carboxyl phosphate combines with amino acid ornithine during urea cycle, during which the body gets rid of nitrogen waste. Studies have also shown that citrulline malate does not only improve one’s strength and delay fatigue but also reduce muscle soreness. The burning sensation that comes when one is exercising is mainly brought about by lactic acid. This can prevent one from working out as much or as long as they like. This is where citrulline malate comes in. It acts as a buffer. It does so by boosting the re-absorption of body’s natural buffers, e.g. bicarbonates. Studies have backed up this by pointing out how it helps in clearing ammonia and lactate from the blood. The fact that citrulline malate acts as a precursor to ornithine and arginine means that it has to undergo conversion to either of these amino acids in the kidney. This conversion takes time, and it causes an increase in plasma arginine. A sustained period of boosted blood flow, therefore, allows this supplement to increase one’s performance during a workout and also recovery outside the gym. Enhanced production of growth hormone is caused by the conversion of citrulline to arginine, which blocks the binding of the hormone that prevents the production of GH. This supplement prevents the production of GH from being blocked by increased plasma arginine.
